When there was evil in the world,
Fear and uncertainty spread like a virus,
A disease of doubt.
Depression reigned.
The evil was doubt itself–doubt
In what every young child
Knows, before being
Trained otherwise. Doubt
That anyone who can
Smile, and anyone who can’t,
Has a radiant heart beating
Wildly to connect, to save.
Doubt that joy needs no cause.
Groaning and dreading,
Merwin said,
Are a waste of time, when
The very world is
Falling apart.
It isn’t that there are
Questions with no answers.
The truth is,
There are no questions.
